Debuting today as part of IGN First for the month of June, we get to see seven minutes of Sonic Frontiers gameplay.
I find myself neither overwhelmed or underwhelmed. Just …whelmed?
It’s a unique and curious world, but I find myself strained to call it interesting. There is a mystery on this strange island of floating grindrails and convenient Sonic-springs, but the gameplay footage has done little to inspire me to get to the bottom of it. Many have described it as resembling a “Tech Demo”, and it appears I have no original thoughts of my own, because I absolutely agree. The presentation does entirely come across like on of those many “Sonic the Hedgehog Remade in Unreal 5 Engine [PRANK! GONE WRONG!]” videos that permeate the YouTube sphere.
That’s not to say it looks dreadful – just woefully unfinished. The movement for the blue blur is serviceable, and the myriad of navigation options available to him does suggest a fun player-driven choice when zipping across the landscape. But with the deep mystery still present regarding the narrative and the antagonist, it’s a hard sell.
