Revealed today, the gameplay teaser for Sonic Frontiers paints quite an interesting picture of what to expect.
It’s a very quick teaser (Much like the ‘Hog himself) but we do clearly see the open world, familiar traversal methods, some interactive puzzle items alongside a snippet of airborne ‘spinball’ combat:
When Frontiers was first teased as an open world title, I will admit that my first reaction was one of dread. The history of ‘dropped balls’ within Sonic’s past made me imagine a vast world where you would spend positively forever running to places – a missed point as to why these kinds of titles can be appealing.
From this positively snack-sized teaser, I do see an environment that seems quite deliberately crafted. Of course, this is only scratching the games surface – but indications are good. It’s also pretty neat seeing a landscape that appears as a sexier, Xbox/PS5-powered version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Even the combat seems interesting.
The restrained marketing of this new title has me wondering if perhaps Sonic Team is more inclined to do a slow boil, and even seek feedback prior to a proper release. Tiny teasers, no big pushes – just a very very slow burn of details over time. The title does has a tenuous 2022 release date, so who knows what might be waiting for us when it finally hits systems. With a full reveal coming within the next 24 hours, we can only speculate.
