Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Is Basically A New Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, And That Rules

With some Sonic Riders for good measure

With a new PlayStation State of Play showcase this morning came a heap of new trailers, reveals and info on upcoming games headed to PS5. There was a lot in the show to love, but a gameplay reveal trailer for one game in in particular that came in nice and early in the piece has managed to get me more excited than anything else I’ve seen this year.

That game? Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Anyone that’s spent adequate time with me has probably heard me evangelise about the superiority of both Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed in the mascot kart racer sphere at one point or another, and although 2019’s Team Sonic Racing was alright in its own way, it’s that middle title that I’ve been desperate to see revisited in some form (as has our very own Ash Wayling, I’m sure).

Thankfully, this new trailer makes Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds look like a direct sequel to Transformed if there ever was one. Just like in that game, Sonic and friends will be racing on tracks that evolve over the course of multiple laps with vehicles adapting on the fly to land, sea and air sections, and SEGA is even teasing once again bringing characters from outside of the Sonic universe to enter the competition.

Taking things a step further again though, CrossWorlds will feature a brand-new track mechanic that sees drivers travel through portals mid-race and cross over to new worlds on the fly, a la Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Maybe even more exciting, we’re even getting a little bit of Sonic Riders in this game with the introduction of Extreme Gear (see: hoverboards). We are so back.

A PS5-exclusive Closed Network Test has also been announced for CrossWorlds, which will kick off next week from February 22nd to February 24th. Keen racers can apply for the CNT here.

Are you excited for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds? Do you also agree that Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is the best kart racer? Let us know in the comments below or on social media.
