We did tell you to take this information with a pinch of salt, and it appears for good reason too.
Earlier today it was reported that Sony was in talks to acquire Take-Two Interactive, owner of Rockstar Games (Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption etc.) and 2K (NBA2K etc.). These reports appear to be wide of the mark, as gameindustry.biz discovered after speaking to the man at the apparent centre of the claim, Joel Kulina. When contacted, Kulina seemed dumbfounded at the amount of attention the information tidbit had caused.
This is purely unconfirmed market speculation that is making the rounds. I am not the source of this story in any regard. And not sure who quoted me as I didn’t speak with anyone over the phone (unless someone saw a trading note that I wrote).
The wildfire rumour appears to have spread based on passing information (water cooler talk amongst traders) rather than factual information. While it would seem unlikely that Sony and Take-Two would enter such an agreement, that’s not to say that Sony and Take-Two aren’t in discussions. However, it is unlikely that knowledge of such a deal would be in the public sector without any real concrete evidence.
[ORIGINAL STORY FOLLOWS]
In what would be one of the biggest acquisitions in the history of business, Sony is rumoured to be in talks to acquire Take-Two Interactive and its roster of companies, including Rockstar Games and 2K, if a recent report is to be believed.
An analyst reporting for share market website MarketWatch writes that Take-Two’s shares have seen a noticeable increase in value given Sony’s reported interest.
Take-Two Interactive Software TTWO, -0.19%shares jumped 6.9%, its best day since October 2018. Joel Kulina, head of technology and media trading at Wedbush Securities, referenced rumors about potential takeover interest from Sony Corp. SNE, +0.04% in a note to clients.
While this deal would be insane if it eventuates, given the arsenal of IPs Take-Two owns (just think, GTA6 a PS5 exclusive :0?), it’s best to take this news with a pinch of salt for the time being.
