Swedish publishing outfit Starbreeze AB have confirmed that Payday 3, the follow-up to the popular Payday 2 has begun development.
The announcement was made via the company’s end of year report for 2016, which was posted yesterday, which you can view here.
The report stated the below quote in regards to Payday 3:
It is with great satisfaction that we also can announce that PAYDAY 3 production is officially initiated and at a full design stage. I’d like to especially clarify, that this project will enjoy as much time as we deem needed. It will be done when it’s done. This is our single most important brand today and the cornerstone of our business and we will treat it accordingly. Updates in the near future might be scares and far between. You simply don’t rush PAYDAY 3.
Based on the above statement, don’t be surprised if we don’t see it for a long time.
Furthermore, Overkill Software, the game’s developer, put out a series of tweets answering fans questions via Twitter earlier today. Some of note are the following:
we've learnt a lot from our past mistakes

If you’re like mysef and played Payday 2 on consoles, you will know of the complete shafting that the console community got from Overkill and Starbreeze. I understand that the game’s primary community is PC, however, that doesn’t excuse the lack of updates that console players were faced with. Not only that, but when it came to a major console update, players were forced to buy another iteration of the game to get all the latest missions etc. Let’s hope they truly have learnt from their mistakes as Payday 2 was some of the most fun multiplayer gameplay I’ve had.
We're still working on PAYDAY 2, don't worry. No information yet on characters in PAYDAY 3.

No, we're developing that too.

This tweet comes as good news, despite knowing jack all about the game even though it was announced way back in August 2014. Both Overkill and Starbreeze have remained super tight-lipped about the title and you can’t fault fans for wondering whether the project was still in development. Hopefully this year yields more news for both titles.
