The AO Summer Smash Hits Fortnite This Weekend

Smashing it out

Tennis Australia is inviting Aussie players back to Fortnite with the recently announced Australian Open Summer Smash event to be held this weekend. The two-day competition sees players competing for a share of the US$50,000 prize in celebration of the Australian Open’s concluding matches on the 28th and 29th of January. Alongside the competition, players are invited to play in a special charity event dubbed the Summer Smash Creator series with another 50k on the line for charities nominated by headlining Aussie creators.

The AO Summer Smash will be run across Saturday and Sunday, kicking off with a four-hour-long qualifier Battle Royale at 1 pm AEDT. The 80 best performing players from Saturday’s rumble will progress to Sunday’s finals, a Solos event that will also see 10 Wild Card entries join the battle. If you’re keen to jump in you can fill out the form by following this link.

Meanwhile, the Summer Smash Creator event will feature some major Australian talent, including Lachlan, Loserfruit and LazarBeam. This Fortnite Icon Series tournament will take place over three matches this weekend with the winning team’s chosen charity receiving US$50,000 in donations. Competitive Fortnite player Looter has expressed excitement over the event, noting that “The AO Tournament only happens once a year, and it’s a tournament with a huge prize pool that every OCE competitor looks forward to.”

Tennis Australia’s head of innovation Machar Reid has also spoken about the organisation’s ongoing work with Epic Games. “We’ve had an incredible collaboration with Fortnite over the past five years, enabling us to build an authentic connection with the next generation of sports fans, and people of varied interests, whether it be in person at the event, or digitally through our streams and platforms.”

If you’re keen to check out these events this weekend, the competitive and creator tournaments will be live-streamed on Australia Open’s YouTube and Twitch channels from 11 am AEDT on Sunday 29th.
