The Australian Pricing For The PS5 Pro Has Been Revealed And You Might Want To Sit Down

Roughly the price of my yearly car insurance

Sony has announced that the newly unveiled PS5 Pro will be released on November 7 and retail for $1,199.95 in Australia.

This morning’s PlayStation Technical Showcase finally gave us our first official look at the long-rumoured and heavily leaked mid-generation update to Sony’s gaming hardware. The upgraded console will feature a better GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s answer to NVIDIA DLSS. In layman’s terms, the console is looking to close the gap between performance and fidelity modes, ultimately aiming to remove the choice entirely.

Speculation, based on the US price, was around $1,050, but the beefier box will be even more expensive than predicted. It’s a tough ask, considering the Pro is a disc-less console and will require a separate purchase if you want to use physical media. For the sake of fairness, the console will ship with a 2TB SSD, which is double that of the current PS5 Slim, but it also ditches the vertical stand (much like the Slim), requiring yet another separate purchase.

This is quite obviously a premium product that comes with a premium price. Thankfully, this time around, the mid-generation release isn’t as mandatory as the PS4 Pro, which was released at a time when base PS4 consoles were struggling to run more demanding titles. The PS5 is still a very capable system, so this Pro is more of a purchase for those who want the top-of-the-line gear. Either way, that’s a wild price point.
