Does anyone remember PlayStation Stars? Didn’t think so.
PlayStation has announced that its rewards program, named PlayStation Stars, will be coming to a close, with the entire initiative ending on November 2, 2026.
Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the deconstruction of the PlayStation Stars program begins today, with any potential new members being turned away. The post explains that current members have until July 23 to earn points and digital collectables and participate in campaigns. After this date, there will be no way to earn points, and all campaigns will cease. Furthermore, any members who cancel their membership will forfeit their points, as there is no way to rejoin.
Finally, schedule a day of mourning, as November 2, 2026, will mark the death of PlayStation Stars. Oh, but rest easy; your digital collectables will still be accessible.
For those wondering what this is all about, PlayStation Stars was a loyalty program introduced in 2022 that would see members earn points for every dollar spent on the PlayStation Store. These points could then be used on practical things, like codes for games and credit to spend on the PlayStation Store. Alternatively, you could also buy digital collectables that you can look at in the PlayStation App. Dangerously close to NFTs, right?
PlayStation came under fire when they removed the ability to earn points from PlayStation Plus subscriptions, which, in hindsight, was writing on the wall for today’s announcement. For what it’s worth, I signed up for Stars and used my points to buy a few digital games, so it was worth it for me.
The blog post ended with a vague allusion to a future loyalty initiative, so we’ll wait and see what comes of that. “As we explore new ways to evolve our loyalty program efforts for the future, we’ll continue to celebrate all of our players through the various community activities we have planned. ”
