Ubisoft Announces Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, A New Free-To-Play Multiplayer First-Person Shooter

Ubisoft is entering the arena shooter space

Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, a new free-to-play, class-based multiplayer shooter that’s set to release on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC.

The 6v6 shooter will have players choosing a character (Defiant) from four playable Factions based on groups from Splinter Cell, The Division and Ghost Recon, all with their own distinct looks, traits and abilities. More Factions and characters will be added to the game post-launch, but the initial four will consist of:

  • Wolves (Ghost Recon)
  • Cleaners (The Division)
  • Outcasts (The Division)
  • Echelon (Splinter Cell)

Once you’ve picked your Defiant from one of the Factions you’ll be able to pick your primary and secondary weapons and customise them with a list of attachments and devices. You’ll also be able to tweak your loadout on the fly to ensure that you’ve got the right gear for the situation.

XDefiant will feature casual and competitive play, with modes such as Domination, Escort, Zone Control and Upload being available to play across both. We didn’t get any kind of release information with this announcement, though there will be a closed playtest on PC taking place on August 5 that’s unfortunately only available in North America. More playtests and betas were promised, so it’s worth registering your interest for future events if you’re keen.

What do you think of XDefiant? Will you be jumping in? Let us know.
