Ubisoft Is Hiking The Price Of Its AAA Games Starting With Skull And Bones

Plundering ya pennies

If you’ve ever seen the movie Old School, there’s a scene where Will Farrell is streaking (up the quad and to the gymnasium) and gets caught by his wife. His response: “Everybody’s doing it.” I don’t know why but that’s the first thing I thought of when I read the news that Ubisoft is upping the prices of its “big AAA games.”

The news comes from an interview Ubisoft’s top dog Yves Guillemot did with Axios, where the CEO says that the upcoming Skull and Bones will launch at US$70 (up from US$60), which is “the same price as the competition,” before stating that all of the publisher’s big AAA games will launch at US$70, following the lead of Sony, 2K, and more. However, not all Ubisoft games will cost a premium, with Assassin’s Creed Mirage coming in a little cheaper at US$50, although Australian prices put both Skull and Bones and Mirage relatively on par unless you’re shopping at EB Games.

While price hikes aren’t new, the fact that Ubisoft is testing the waters with Skull and Bones, a game that was seemingly docked in the port of development hell for a long time and is launching alongside God of War: Ragnarok, is a very odd but bold move. Time will tell if it pays off.

Skull and Bones launches on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on November 8.

What do you make of Ubisoft’s price increase? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
