AEW: Fight Forever Gets A New Gameplay Trailer But Avoids A Release Date Due To Ratings Issues

Wait forever *clap, clap, clap clap clap*

THQ Nordic and All Elite Wrestling have released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming wrestling game AEW: Fight Forever as part of the IGN Fan Fest 2023.

The two-minute trailer, debuting during IGN’s Fan Fest event, re-enacts the incredible match between the then-AEW World Heavy Champion “Hangman” Adam Page and Bryan Danielson from an episode of Dynamite in January 2022.

We get to see some in-ring action, intercut with clips from the match itself. Gameplay shows off the entrances and finishers of each wrestler, as well as a solid amount of blood gushing from both men’s heads (which absolutely happened in the real match). Running knees, Buckshot Lariats, Deadeyes and a number of other high-risk moves were on display, with the gameplay looking fresh and fun.

Unfortunately, those hoping to get a release date during the closing stretches of this trailer were left disappointed, myself included. The first mention of an AEW console video game came all the way back in November of 2020, with the official reveal of the Fight Forever title coming in May of 2022. Despite all of this time going by, with multiple trailers and details being shared, we still don’t have a release date.

Thanks to a recent interview, we now know why…kind of. Speaking with fellow AEW wrestler Swerve Strickland on his Swerve City Podcast, AEW EVP Kenny Omega said, “It does suck that the rating has held us back a little bit because we really wanted to get it out.”

According to Omega, the game originally featured far more blood and gore, but in order to appease the ratings board, developer Yuke’s was forced to scale it back. Omega continued, “I’m not sure how much we had to scale it back, but man, I loved it. You could make the ring look like a murder scene if you wanted to. I just hope there is still some way to get a semblance of that.”

AEW: Fight Forever will release on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and PC eventually.
