Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition And Age of Mythology: Retold Are Coming To PS5 This Year

No longer a mythed opportunity

Not long after dropping the bombshell that the previously Xbox console exclusive (and genuine system-seller) Forza Horizon 5 is set to cross the border into PlayStation territory with a PS5 port later this year, Microsoft has already lifted the lid on another of its darling franchises shedding exclusivity in favour of a new audience. And this time, it’s a pair of scrubbed-up RTS classics in 2019’s Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and last year’s Age of Mythology: Retold.

Both games are enhanced versions of their respective original bangers, complete with console-friendly controls and huge servings of content, and both are currently available only for PC, Xbox consoles and cloud streaming—but that’s about to change.

Age of Mythology: Retold is first cab off the rank with a March 4 release locked in for PS5 (a Premium Edition will be available with 5-day early access starting on February 27), and will include all of the same content as the other platforms. PS5 players will be able to purchase the paid Immortal Pillars expansion at launch, and from March 4 onwards all updates to the game will apply to all platforms including PlayStation.

You can pre-order Age of Mythology: Retold digitally on the PlayStation Store right now:

Following that, in roughly “Autumn,” PS5 players will be able to pick up Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition with similar stipulations to Mythology. Adding to this, a brand-new DLC expansion will be coming to the game at the same time, though what’s in it is still mostly under wraps. The official post says to expect “fresh new content” and “new civilisations for Ranked play.”

It definitely feels, in 2025, much more like PlayStation owners (and perhaps, eventually Switch 2 owners) are on the road to enjoying parity with Xbox players as far as Xbox Studios-developed releases go, which can only ever be a good thing, right?
