Battlefield REDSEC Is A Free-To-Play Battle Royale With A Few Extra Bells And Whistles

California dreaming

EA and Battlefield Studios have finally lifted the lid on Battlefield REDSEC, and it’s a more fleshed-out free-to-play experience than we expected.

Going live this morning at 2AM AEDT, this first foray into the free-to-play space for the Battlefield series sees the trademark destruction, vehicle mayhem, and squad-based gameplay injected into the battle royale genre. Matches play out on a huge map called Fort Lyndon, which encompasses the streets, homes, backyards, and hillsides of Southern California. 100 players parachute onto the map before scavenging for weapons and supplies to bolster their chances against enemy squads who are all vying to be the last team standing. A closing circle of fire pushes squads towards a final fight, with the biggest wrinkle being Battlefield’s destructible environments playing a major role in encounters.

While we’ve known about the battle royale portion of this package for a while, there’s more to this free-to-play offering. REDSEC also offers a new mode named Gauntlet, in which eight squads of four compete in a round-based tournament to determine a winner. Each five-minute round will see squads attempt to complete a new mission, and any team that fails will be eliminated from the round. Furthermore, the Battlefielf Portal creation suite has also made its way over to REDSEC, with players able to create their own experiences, like sledgehammers only, one-shot kills, or whatever ungodly mix the community comes up with.

Of course, being a free-to-play title, Battlefield REDSEC offers a cosmetic battle pass that unlocks skins and items that are used across REDSEC and Battlefield 6.

Even without an additional free-to-play multiplayer experience, Battlefield 6 is one of 2025’s best releases. We scored it a 9, saying in our review that, “Battlefield 6 is more than a return to form; it’s one of the best entries in the franchise.”

As a quick aside, there’s a sneaky extra feature added with the launch of season one: an in-game radio that can be enjoyed in jeeps, tanks, and other vehicles. Players have already noticed music playing through vehicle speakers, but as of today, those radios will feature artists like Limp Bizkit, Pantera, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Bob Dylan (that’s a funny one). If you’re a real fiend for Battlefield, you can even take the radio with you into the real world with the official Battlefield Playlist on Spotify.

Battlefield REDSEC is currently available to play for free across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
