Let us help you in your playthrough of Casebook 1899 – The Leipzig Murders

Releasing on September 4 on PC platform SteamCasebook 1899 – The Leipzig Murders is a point-and-click adventure set in Leipzig, Germany, in the late 19th century that has you playing as a detective investigating four murder cases. If your investigation has led you to this guide, then let us assist you in solving the case.

Madcap Motorist

Inspect the key rack to the right of the door. Open your notebook and select “Investigate the office to find clues”. Check the alphabetical filing cabinet on the right and your desk on the left.

Select both “The filing cabinet is sorted alphabetically” and “I last worked on the Rosenlöcher case”. This lets you check the “R” drawer on the alphabetical cabinet. Inspect it twice to get the Key. Use the Key on the door to open it.

You get the Freedom achievement during the scene.

Speak to Inspector Welm and go through all the options. Inspect the door to leave and when the map opens, select Plagwitz to the southwest.

At Plagwitz, talk to Inspector Kreiser in the centre if you need hints. Otherwise, perform the following:

  7. Inspect the lunchbox to the west and take the Hammer
  8. Use the Hammer in your inventory on the lunchbox or the wooden frame it is on
  9. Pick up the Lunchbox from the ground
  10. Use the Lunchbox on the construction worker August Baumann to the west, pursue all speech options
  11. Consult your notebook and select “The brake band is broken”
  12. Leave the conversation and check your notebook. Select “The driver suffered a head wound” and “The driver neither tried to swerve nor to jump off”
  13.  When identifying motives, choose the left option. “Eduard Uhlich could not react in time to avoid the accident. This indicates that he was not conscious during the accident.”

You should get the Elementary achievement here if you didn’t get it before.

Leave Plagwitz and head northeast to Villa Uhlich. Perform the following:

  1. Speak to Emma Uhlich on the right and pursue all speech options
  2. Check the plants to the right of Emma
  3. Check the white bowl on the east side of the screen
  4. Speak with Max Töpfer, the mechanic, on the left and pursue all speech options

  7. Ask Emma about “There is a bowl of deadly nightshade in the garden”
  8. Ask Emma about “The driver drowned”
  9. Speak with Max and check your notebook to ask about “Max Töpfer argued with Eduard Uhlich over withheld wages”

  11. Return to Villa Uhlich and use the Lamp on the garage behind Max to get Scissors
  12. Use the Scissors in your inventory on the Brake
  13. In your notebook, combine “The edges of the brake band and the blades of the scissors seem similar” and “The brake band is broken”
  14. In your notebook, combine “Emma Uhlich collected deadly nightshade – allegedly by accident” and “Eduard Uhlich was so agitated this morning that he spoke incoherently”
  15. In your notebook, combine “The Uhlichs last had a very bitter argument” with “Eduard Uhlich had several mistresses”
  16. In your notebook, combine “Max Töpfer argued with Eduard Uhlich over withheld wages” with “Max Töpfer quit his job as Uhlich’s mechanic”

You can declare either Emma Uhlich or Max Töpfer to be the murderer. To make Emma the murderer, you must use the following motives:

  • Eduard’s consciousness: Eduard Uhlich could not react in time to avoid the accident. This indicates that he was not conscious during the accident.
  • Emma’s knowledge: Emma Uhlich knew exactly of the dangers the nightshade posed.
  • View the Poison motive and you can declare Emma the murderer.

For Max to be the murderer, you must use the following motives:

  • Eduard’s consciousness: Eduard Uhlich tried to brake in order to avoid the accident but it was in vain. This indicates that he was conscious during the accident.
  • Torn brake band: The edges of the brake band match Max Töpfer’s scissors. He cut the brake band to provoke an accident.
  • View the Sabotage motive to declare Max as the murderer.

If you have enough evidence to get motives for Emma and Max, you can declare both to be joint murderers.

If you accuse both Emma and Max, you get the One stone, two birds achievement. You also get Madcap Motorist no matter who you accuse.
