Back in December 2024, Charles Cecil teased the existence of Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Reforged in the annual Revolution Software Christmas video, and today, the adventure game veteran studio has officially announced that it is coming in early 2026 to PS5, Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.
First released in October 1997 on PlayStation and PC, The Smoking Mirror is the second entry in the Broken Sword series and sees George Stobbart and Nico Collard travel across Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America as they attempt to unravel a deadly Mayan conspiracy steeped in ancient artifacts and dark magic.
Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Reforged gives this beloved point-and-click classic a 4K visual makeover alongside enhanced audio and modern accessibility features (Story Mode with hint system). But if you want to kick it old-school, with the push of a button you can toggle to the original visuals, and you can play it in Traditional Mode – the way Tezcatlipoca intended.
On the game’s announcement, Charles Cecil, founder and CEO of Revolution Software said that “The Smoking Mirror has always been one of our most loved games, and with Reforged we were able to enhance it in ways that respect the original while making it shine for modern audiences.”
A Steam page is live now for those who want to chuck it on their Wishlist, while Revolution has teased a Collector’s Edition Kickstarter. More info on that will be shared soon.
The Smoking Mirror is the second Broken Sword game to get the Reforged treatment, with the OG, Broken Sword – Shadow Of The Templars the first to get spruced up for modern audiences. I scored it a 10 in my review, writing that “Just as it was in 1996, Broken Sword – Shadow of the Templars: Reforged is an adventure game masterpiece, with Reforged offering players a remarkable trip down memory lane and giving the classic a new lease on life for a new generation of adventurers.”
A new entry in the series was announced – Broken Sword: Parzival’s Stone – in August 2023, but news has been virtually non-existent, with Cecil confirming to WellPlayed in 2024 that the game would miss its 2024 release window. Given the small nature of the Revolution team and the high cost of development these days, they’re likely focusing on reforging the classics to get some money in the coffers for Broken Sword – Parzival’s Stone.
