Massive Monster Creative Director Julian Wilton has revealed that there will be no further free content updates for Cult of the Lamb, at least for now.
During our interview with Julian ahead of his appearance at PAX Aus 2024, we discussed the positive reception for Cult of the Lamb’s recent content update, titled Unholy Alliance, which added the option to play cooperatively, with another player taking on the role of the Goat. Replying to our comment that this update made fans of the game happy, Julian said, “And we’re very, very happy to do it for them. I don’t know if we’ve officially said anything yet, but I think it’s going to be the last of our free updates for now. We have given a lot of love, and now it’s time to get some money from people.”
Said with tongue in cheek, this does confirm that the long stretch of free content updates is, at a minimum, pausing for now. Since its release in 2022, Cult of the Lamb has received a range of free updates added to the game, like Sins of the Flesh introducing sex (yes, actually) and Relics of the Old Faith providing a post-game storyline for those who hit credits. The game currently features a few purchasable add-ons; however, these are cosmetic items that include new Follower outfits and decorations. The Pilgrim Pack was the first to add a storyline and quest to the game, but it doesn’t sound like we’re stopping there.
Elsewhere in our chat, we asked if the team had any other requested features that are likely to be added to the game, to which Julian said, “There aren’t heaps of other ones at the moment. The big one was adding in that second character. We’ve seen a lot of love for that. But we’ve also got some ideas of potentially some little pets, or maybe there is some sort of ranching where you can get resources from other animals in other animal forms, which may or may not be in a new update we make. I cannot confirm nor deny.”
So, while the free content updates are slowing down, it doesn’t sound like development on Cult of the Lamb is. If you’d like to watch our full interview with Julian, you can do so here:
We love Cult of the Lamb, giving it a rare 10 in our review, saying, “Cult of the Lamb stands as a true masterpiece of not one but two genres. I just couldn’t find any issues that got in the way of my enjoyment of its various mechanics, and the love I have for my clan will continue long past the final boss encounter.”
