Games To Play While You Are Waiting For Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Playing the time away

March 20 and the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons cannot come fast enough, especially with Nintendo teasing us with some new footage in the latest Direct. While many of us wait patiently for the game’s release, here are some suggested and upcoming games to pass the time (T-minus 193 days).

Dragon Quest Builders 1 or 2 or both

I can’t recommend the Dragon Quest Builders series enough. RPGs with building/crafting and great writing are so easy to sink hours and hours into, and both Dragon Quest Builders games are no exception to that. While you could jump straight into the sequel, you are missing out on at least 40 hours of great gameplay by skipping the first game, so I’d recommend playing that first. Also don’t worry if you haven’t played a Dragon Quest game before, they aren’t tied to the main series story-wise.If you’re still unsure, both games have demos to try out on? (though the one for the first game won’t carry over progress, boo!). Both games are available now on Switch and PS4.

Mineko’s Night Market

While currently delayed until an unknown date due to developer burn out, I’m still hoping that this title from Meowza Games will release before the new Animal Crossing does, as I might not be able to tear myself away, even for a game full of cats. With a charming painterly art style, crafting and more cats then you can shake a mouse at (hell you can even race them), this game is super high on the cuteness and quirky scale. It is also inspired by Animal Crossing and should appeal to fans of the series and those that love cute things, crafting, or growing things (or cats). Mineko’s Night Market will be releasing on PC and Switch.

Forager

Stupidly addictive, Forager by HopFrog is a 2D open-world adventure/survival/farming game where your world gets successively bigger as you progress and spend your hard-earned coin. You play as a little white chibi entity in a colourful world that include giant beets that will still love you if you kill them. This game allows you to set your own goals and play how you want! Forager is available now on Switch, PS4 and PC.

Pokémon Sword and Shield

The next generation in the ever-popular series, Pokémon Sword and Shield is taking us to the Galar region in our first ever mainline game on a home console. I’m looking forward to setting out into this vast roaming world and discovering lots of new Pokémon pals and trying all of the new activities. Pokémon Sword and Shield releases exclusively on Switch on November 15.

Re:Legend

Re:Legend is an RPG game filled with monster-taming/raising and farming following you washing up on Vokka Island after a nasty incident with no memory. The game came out of a super successful Kickstarter by Magnus Games and has a lot of aspects that should charm Animal Crossing fans, such as many cute monsters (known as Magnus) to befriend, a colourful and fun chibi art style, as well as many interesting NPC’s including a family of penguins! Re:Legend is out now in Early Access on PC and will be coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One in the future.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

A game I’m looking forward to closing out 2019 with is Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin by Edelweiss. With stunning visuals, the game is a side-scrolling action game coupled with deep crafting and farming simulation. The game is a unique take of Japanese mythology with you playing as Sakuna, a spoilt harvest goddess banished to a dangerous island. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is slated to release on Switch, PS4 and PC in Q4 this year.
