I Hate This Place Is A Stylish Isometric Horror Game That Will Have You Walking On Eggshells

Don’t make a sound

Developer Rock Square Thunder has released a gameplay trailer for its isometric horror game, I Hate This Place, that shows that footsteps should be met with fear.

Revealed a few short months ago, I Hate This Place is an isometric survival horror game based on the comic book series of the same name, created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin. Set in Rutherford Ranch, a location that has been beset with reality-warping monstrocities, players will need to scavenge for resources and fortify their camp by day, and attempt to survive against the nightmarish creatures that grow far stronger at night.

Two elements help I Hate This Place stand out from the survival horror crowd. The first is the game’s bright and bold comic book art style and 80s aesthetic, both of which come together to give the game a striking visual identity. The second is the game’s approach to sound. Most of the enemies are blind and hunt by sound, making every movement a potential death sentence. As detailed in a PlayStation Blog post, movement is separated into three types:

  • Green footsteps mean you’re quiet, crouched, moving slowly, minimising risk.
  • Yellow signals you’re walking at a normal pace and making moderate noise.
  • Red means you’re running or being loud, and you’re a beacon for danger.

While this is far from ideal when you’re wanting to make a quick getaway, or if you’re hoping to start blastin’ a bunch of enemies without calling down the entire Ranch on you, it can also be used to your advantage. The age-old throw of an object to distract your enemies can allow you to slip past unnoticed, and it looks like it will often be the difference between life and a violent death.

I Hate This Place is scheduled for a 2025 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC.
