January 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

A wasteland far, far away

The Christmas decorations are getting packed away, the leftovers have been eaten, and the food regret is starting to set in. A new year brings with it a whole new batch of releases to be excited about, but those with time off over the holiday season will still need some games to play before the launches start to roll in. 2022’s PlayStation Plus output was sent off with Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Divine Knockout: Founder’s Edition and Biomutantbut we’re looking down the barrel of a new year, so let’s look forward.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for January are Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76 and Axion Verge 2. All three games will be available to download from January 4.

With the sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, getting a March 17 release date at The Game Awards, now is the perfect time to get around Respawn’s first foray into the galaxy far, far away. Fallen Order is a challenging action-adventure Soulslike that tells the story of young Jedi Cal Kestis as he traverses the galaxy to fight against the Empire. Whether you’re a diehard fan of the franchise or love a good action game, Fallen Order will dangerously scratch an itch with a lightsaber. We gave Fallen Order a 9.

I won’t sugarcoat it, Fallout 76 was released in a rough state, with a certain ‘canvas’ bag situation making things even worse. In saying that, the numerous updates and expansions that the online multiplayer game has received over the years have put it in a far better place. If the initial controversy pushed you away, this may be the perfect time to dip your toes into the irradiated water and give it a try.

A side-scrolling action game with a pixel art aesthetic, Axiom Verge 2 is an indie lover’s indie game. Swapping between two connected worlds, the player takes control of various characters with numerous abilities and gameplay possibilities. Platforming and blasting your way through enemies, you’ll need to master the game’s systems in order to make it back home.

If you haven’t downloaded Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Divine Knockout: Founder’s Edition and Biomutant, you’ve got until January 2 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.
