June 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

Dinos, dunking and death

The cold is setting in, the days are getting darker, and the rains are here. That might sound a bit gloomy, but isn’t that just perfect weather for having a hot drink and playing some video games? The new-release train isn’t exactly slowing down this month, but having some killer titles to play in between the new kids on the block is always appreciated. The May line-up for PlayStation Plus gave us GRID Legends, Chivalry II and Descenders, which provided the goods, but it’s time to look forward.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for May are NBA 2K23, Jurassic Park Evolution 2 and Trek to Yomi. These three games will be available to download from June 6.

While I don’t consider myself a sporting man, there’s always fun to be had with chucking on a sports game to play with some mates. One of the premiere titles in the sporting game genre that never seems to miss is the NBA 2K series. While 2K23 didn’t innovate in many meaningful ways, instead iterating on the previous release, it’s nevertheless an excellent basketball experience. We gave it a 7.5.

If things went pear-shaped in the original Jurassic Park film, you have to wonder why anyone thought it was a good idea to re-open the park decades later. In contrast, the original Jurassic World Evolution, a game that lets you create and run your own dino-filled holiday destination, was a rousing success, so a sequel makes perfect sense. This time around, there are new dinosaurs, four game modes and heaps of new features, however, that pales in comparison to the inclusion of Jeff Goldblum voicing Dr. Ian Malcom. Life, uh, finds a way.

Looking like a playable Kurosawa film, Trek to Yomi is an action platformer with an immediately striking monochromatic visual style. Playing as Hiroki, a young samurai who’s on a path of vengeance, players slice and dice their way through invading forces and the supernatural foes from Yomi, the land of the dead. While the gameplay is a little on the shallow side, the presentation makes this one worth playing alone. We gave it a 7.

If you haven’t downloaded GRID: Legends, Chivalry 2 and Descenders, you’ve got until May 1 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.
