It’s already May, where does the time go? That’s rhetorical; I know my time has been spent frying my brain in Blue Prince. There are an insane number of excellent new releases to play, but what if I told you that none of those will matter once you boot up one of the PS Plus games in this month’s line-up? Get ready for your next obsession, or take your current one to another platform. I’m so sorry.
As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essentials games for May are Ark: Survival Ascended, Balatro, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. These three games will be available for download on May 6.
If you haven’t played Ark: Survival Evolved, I’m genuinely shocked. The survival game riddled with dangerous dinosaurs was released back in 2015 and has seen a ridiculous amount of success, along with various updates and expansions over the years. Survival Ascended brings the beloved survival game into the modern day with an Unreal Engine 5 rework and a consolidation of all content released since the game’s original launch. You can craft, explore, and inevitably die by the hand of a dino in massive online servers with up to 70 players, or you can build a base in a private server with up to eight friends. Either way, expect to be punching trees for a few hours before getting eaten by a raptor. For real, though, Ark is a banger, so if you haven’t played it before, this is the best way to do it.
Okay, if you haven’t played and become consumed by Balatro yet, I’m warning you now: Don’t play this game if you have loved ones. Alright, that’s a bit much, but seriously, this game is addictive as well hell. Looking on the surface to be nothing more than another poker game, Balatro is a devilishly clever deck-builder that has more layers than a damn onion. The premise is simple enough, with players needing to beat increasing blinds by gaining chips awarded for playing poker hands. But game-altering joker cards, celestial cards, and tarot cards will completely change the way each hand plays out. This probably sounds dull still, but trust me, play a few rounds, and you’ll be hooked.
It’s always nice when a game from your wishlist hits a subscription service. Boltgun is a pixel-art boomer shooter set in the Grimdark universe of 40K. Playing as the walking tank of a Space Marine, Malum Caedo, players embark on a blood-soaked mission to retrieve a mysterious power source from a planet overrun with demons, traitors, and an array of other adversaries that will inevitably become a puddle of innards after you run them through with your chainsword. It’s a fast-paced FPS that ticked most of our boxes, with Ash giving it an 8 in his review.
If you haven’t downloaded RoboCop: Rogue City, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory, you have until May 5 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.
Which game will you be downloading first? What games would you like to see in May? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
