October 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

What a mix of genres

October is the month of the year when we celebrate all things spooky and scary, and it’s also absolutely stacked to the brim with video game releases. How anyone is going to find a pocket of free time between playing the new releases and watching Jason X every night for the entire calendar month is beyond me. Ok, that might be my personal plan, but you get the idea, it’s busy. The subscription service train rolls on, however, and it would be rude of the big blue business not to include a horror game in this month’s drop. In September we got our hands on Saints Row, Black Desert – Traveler Edition and Generation Zero, which was a bit rough, leaving this month to pick up the pieces.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for September are The Callisto Protocol, Farming Simulator 22 and Weird West. These three games will be available to download from October 3.

Developed by Striking Distance Studios, with former Dead Space creator Glen Schofield at the helm, The Callisto Protocol is somewhat of a spiritual successor to that horror classic. Set within the brutal halls of Black Iron Prison, built on Jupiter’s moon, players control Jacob Lee, a man in the wrong place and the wrong time, who now finds himself struggling to survive against unspeakable horrors, all while uncovering the truth about the overrun facility. The game received a somewhat mixed reception at launch, with the melee combat not being to everyone’s liking, but the tone and setting are perfect for a Halloween playthrough.

I feel like I might be a little underqualified to talk about a farming game, but I did grow up in a little country town, so I’m sure I can do this. Do you yearn for a life outside of the city? Does the sound of a harvester bring you peace? Would 400 working machines from 100 real-world agricultural brands get your motor running? Well, you might want to give Farming Simulator 22 a raz then. While they aren’t my jam, the farming sim games are deceptively popular, and this iteration introduces seasons and offers co-op and animal husbandry. Whjat more could you ask for?

Ahh, an isometric RPG set in the gunslinging west, now we’re back in my territory. Weird West is an action RPG that takes the Wild West and mixes in elements of dark fantasy, leaving us with a unique world filled with various colourful characters, factions and decisions to make. Choose your character, fit them out with all manner of six shooters and hit the saloon for a shoot-out with a demonic beastie. We gave Weird West a 7.5.

If you haven’t downloaded Saints Row, Generation Zero and Black Desert, you’ve got until October 2 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.
