Sony Looks To Be Adding A Game Trial Feature To The PS5

The foundations of a good idea

The new Game Trial feature has been added to the PS5 store, though it’s only available in the UK currently.

This new function allows PS5 players to download a free trial of certain games, similar to the good old demo. However, these trials come with a few caveats. First of all, Death Stranding Director’s Cut and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are the only two titles to be given this treatment so far, with more games likely to come.

The game trials are timed, with each title getting its own limit (Death Stranding gets six hours and Sackboy gets five hours). This isn’t out of the ordinary, but the way in which it’s implemented is. As soon as a PS5 user hits download, the timer begins, meaning that a big chunk of your trial time is eaten up by the game downloading. I recently downloaded Death Stranding Director’s Cut for review (I gave it a 9) and it took at least three hours to fully install.

The Game Trials are limited to one use per account, are only available on PS5 and look to be available until October 28 in the UK. Positively, your saved data and trophies carry over from the Game Trial to the full version if you decided to make the purchase.

Here are some images of the store listing (from Eurogamer):

There’s no word as to whether this feature will be rolled out into other territories, but we’ll keep you in the loop if more info becomes available. If this does make its way to Australia, I’m hoping that the timing constraints are tweaked, especially with our slightly lacking internet speeds.

Does this feature interest you at all? What do you think of the trial starting when you hit download? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
