Surprising No-One, Mortal Kombat 1’s First Reveal Trailer Is Ninja-filled

Surprised you could see them

As is tradition, the build up to Mortal Kombat 1’s release promises a steady drip feed of character and gameplay reveals – and today does not disappoint. The very first Kombat Kast dropped today, where people close to the project talk shop about how things are progressing and provide some analytical notes on what we are looking at.

And oh boy, they are leading with a series staple – because the accompanying trailer is chock-full of both Ninjas and Cyborgs of the ninja-variety:

New faces that are now confirmed to be in the game include:

  • Smoke (playable)
  • Rain (playable)
  • Sektor (kameo)
  • Cyrax (kameo)
  • Frost (kameo)

Following the advice of Ed Boon, I am not going to label the above as rigidly stuck in either the ‘playable’ or ‘Kameo’ fighter category, rather I am simply listing how they were presented in the trailer. Ol’ Boon himself has even said that a character appearing as a kameo does not rule-out the possibility of being a full roster addition, so the robot-boys may still have a choice. Not to mention, one of the main kameo assistants we saw in the trailer was Scorpion – so get you a man who can do both.

Speaking of Scorpion, we also see a new facet of the kameo assist mechanics – using them in a personal support capacity. So far every bit of media has showcased how a kameo can wreck your opponents shit in unique ways, with moves that incapacitate or damage opponents; but during the trailer we actually see the Scorpion kameo use his ninja-rope to grab and pull the friendly Sub-Zero player. Take a look when the pair are fighting against Johnny Cage in the snow level – after landing a masterful beatdown on the movie star, the kunai shoots across the screen and into Sub’s back, gently pulling him to the far side of the screen – no blood or harm done to the friendly player. Then, later in the Kombat Kast we see a Kung Lao kameo used to actually give a player a teleport – positively nutty stuff. This adds a pretty cool (kool?) new dimension to what can be achieved with a kameo fighter.

It’s a killer kick off  for the hype-journey that awaits MK fans, and shows that we can absolutely count on the Kombat Kast to give us our fill of deadset awesome MK detail.
