Developer Striking Distance Studios has announced REDACTED, an action roguelike title set in the world of The Callisto Protocol, coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 31.
Revealed during the Gamescom festivities, REDACTED is set in the same world as The Callisto Protocol; in fact, it even takes place in Black Iron Prison on Jupiter’s moon, but its tone and gameplay style are a massive departure from the third-person horror game that came before it. Playing as a guard looking to escape the penitentiary that’s now overrun with infected inmates, players will kit themselves out with various weapons and pieces of gear to fight through the horrors and get as close as they can to the last escape pod.
Being a roguelike, you’ll inevitably die, at which point you can use the loot you earned during your run to upgrade and unlock skills and suits to better prepare you for the next attempt. Alongside former lunch ladies and inmates also vying for the spot on the final pod, you’ll encounter the infected corpses of your previous characters, now looking to take your head clean off your shoulders.
The Callisto Protocol is an ambitious but profoundly flawed action-horror game with unlikeable characters and a dull combat system. However, the world and lore behind the game is a grim sci-fi future with heaps of potential, so it’s great to see that world live on here. With that said, the cell-shaded visuals and attempted humour signal a tonal shift severe enough to give you whiplash. Either way, I’m intrigued to see what becomes of Striking Distance’s next game.
