The Overwatch x NERF Collab Is Trading Lethality For Good Clean Fun

Foam-fuelled fights are coming to Overwatch 2

With the likes of Porsche and Transformers under their belt, the Overwatch 2 team is clearly scanning the horizon for new and exciting collaboration opportunities – and begrudgingly, I have to admit, this one is a deadset banger.

In a game that is well versed in the world of nerfs, bringing the literal NERF brand into the title feels inspired – and an opportunity for some non-lethal fun as well:

Being a weapon-specific collaboration means there is a lot of cool ground to tread for your existing cosmetics, as you can slap a NERF blaster on a character of your choice and enjoy a fun twist on the usual murderous nature of the game.

And who are getting these fun new toys?

  • Cassidy headlines the collab packing a souped up NERF Maverick blaster and a Vortex Football
  • Tracer’s rocks some Gelfire Pros
  • Genji dual wielding a Slingerang plus Power Blast Bat
  • Mei bringing the pressure (literally) with the classic Super Soaker XP100
  • Hanzo’s got a Big Bad Bow
  • Baptiste runs the Galactic Commander
  • Soldier: 76’s precision gets the plastic treatment with N Series Pinpoint

A great return to form is the news that Tracer’s gel blasters will be free to earn as part of the event, a long standing pain point for special events within Overwatch 2 of late. People like free stuff, dang it.

There will also be a cool limited game mode, which sounds like an awesome take on the classic ‘Gun Game’ format:

NERF or Nothin’ is a fast-paced free-for-all where eight players drop in, and the first to hit 20 eliminations claims the win. You’ll start with a random Hero (minus Mercy and Lifeweaver, who are sitting this one out), and every elimination earns you a new Hero. Some of them will come with a new NERF blaster skin to master in combat. Can’t snag a kill? You’ll still rotate after three deaths. No repeats either: once you’ve played a Hero, you won’t get them again.

Right, you’ve sold me. Goofy plastic guns may be the hottest addition to Overwatch 2 since the Stadium game mode.

Catch you all in the foam fight.

What do you think of the Overwatch 2 x NERF collaboration? Enough plastic bang for your buck? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
