The PlayStation VR2 Is Getting A $230 Price Drop

It’s virtually affordable!

Although I will maintain that the PlayStation VR2 deserved better than its lukewarm commercial reception at launch, there’s no denying that a price point putting it well above the cost of the also required PlayStation 5 console wasn’t doing it any favours.

We loved the PS VR2 in our review, citing the fantastic Sense Controllers, headset haptics, eye tracking and PS5-powered visuals, but it was the entry fee of $879.95 (or $959.95 if you wanted the bundle with the also-great Horizon Call of the Mountain) that promised to put it out of reach of the usual punter.

Still, those of us who’ve been fortunate enough to have one have been treated to a pretty decent ongoing library of PS VR2 games, along with recent developments like the ability to use the unit with PC thanks to an adapter released last year.

So it’s great news that PlayStation has just announced a fresh price drop for the PlayStation VR2 starting in March, bringing the RRP of the headset down to a still-pricey but comparatively more affordable $649.95 – that’s a cool $230 off the sticker price. The exact date of the price drop and availability will vary across Aussie retailers, so keep an eye out over the coming weeks.

That new $649.95 RRP seemingly applies to both the standard package and the Call of the Mountain bundle in some regions, presumably in an effort to clear out stocks of the latter, but official word from PlayStation’s Australian office only makes mention of the former.

The PlayStation Blog post announcing the price drop also calls out another new innovation for the PS VR2 with the headset now able to handle low-latency hand tracking in games thanks to a software update. This should offer some interesting new gameplay avenues for developers of future games, as well as those who opt to include it in their current titles such as a new hand-tracking update for Waltz of the Wizard.

So what do you think of this new price point for the PlayStation VR2? Is it enough for you to finally pick one up? Let us know in the comments below or on social media.
