Sony has announced that the PS5 will be receiving an update that adds variable refresh rate support this week.
Through the use of HDMI 2.1, VRR syncs the refresh rate on your display with that of the output device which, in this case, is the PS5. Long story short, this results in greater performance and will ultimately minimise visual hiccups. Announced on the PlayStation Blog, it’s been confirmed that this update will go live in the following few days. It’s worth noting that in order to take advantage of this new update, you’ll need an HMDI 2.1-supported TV or monitor.

The blog post also mentions that there will be an option on the console settings to enable VRR across all PS5 games, whether they have a dedicated update or not. It’s said that this could improve visual performance, though results will likely vary.
