Frictional Games has an uncanny knack in delivering a feeling of unease. Sure, A Machine for Pigs wasn’t quite their usual fare, but they are making sure nobody is going to be rolling their eyes at Amnesia: The Bunker. Taking place in a WW1 Bunker, you are a French soldier tasked with finding a way out – but this bunker is home to many mysteries, and some of them have wicked claws. Also it is super dark in spots – so of course, Frictional Games has addressed that.
A wind up flashlight. That is NOISY as all get out. What a terrifyingly awful idea to force upon the skittish.
Take a look at the entire footage below:
The unlit sections are far from lightless voids – their presentation of formless shapes in the dark are spooky as heck. And seeing the faint reflections of eyes in the dark? Horrifying.
I actually struggle to think of how I could confront this game and force my way through it. Noisy things alerting my foes and light management are probably the two things that impact my fear centre the most – and here they are combined into a twisted single mechanic.
The rest of the footage shows that there is at least another option for a light source, with a flaming torch warding off sickly rats – before fleeing from something unseen snarling in the dark and using a grenade to open a door. The footage ends with a monstrous beast making it’s way towards the player – hard to discern in the dimly lit, smoky hallway – before a single shot from the revolver smash cuts the video to black.
Maybe I will convince a friend to play it, and watch over his shoulder.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Known throughout the interwebs simply as M0D3Rn, Ash is bad at video games. An old guard gamer who suffers from being generally opinionated, it comes as no surprise that he is both brutally loyal and yet, fiercely whimsical about all things electronic. On occasion will make a youtube video that actually gets views.
