Respawn Entertainment has announced Season 16 of Apex Legends titled Revelery, which will go live on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on February 14.
This season won’t be introducing a new Legend, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in content, far from it. Instead of a new Legend, there will be a huge shake-up to the class system that will fundamentally change the meta, altering team dynamics and the flow of a match. Each class will feature a specific perk that will affect gameplay and keep that class distinct from the rest. Details on the perks will be made available soon. The classes for Season 16 and beyond are:
- Assault – Combat utility Legends that are aggressive and force plays.
- Skirmisher – Mobile Legends that have the ability to duck in and out of combat with hit-and-run abilities.
- Recon – Legends that gain intel and can track the enemy.
- Controller – These Legends use abilities to control areas, lock down POI and dig their heels in.
- Support – Healing and support Legends that keep their team alive and stocked up.
Thanks to this rework, all Legends will be touched, though several will receive more extensive changes. Six Legends, including Seer, Lifeline and Wraith, will be hit with a substantial update, with specific details coming soon.
The other major addition during Season 16 comes in the form of a new game mode. The highly-request Team Deathmatch mode will finally make its way to Apex, with two teams battling it out for supremacy. In TDM, two teams of six fight to be the first to hit 30 kills in a round, with the first team to win two rounds taking the match. To make room for this new mode, Arenas is, unfortunately, being sunset. Although this is a bit sad for fans of the mode, TDM feels similar enough that it should scratch the itch.
Joining Team Deathmatch is a new way to enjoy the limited-time modes that Apex fans enjoy. Mixtape will be a revolving playlist of LTMs, allowing players to enjoy altered game modes on a more regular basis. Mixtape will begin with a rotation of Gun Run, Control and Team Deathmatch three weeks after the launch of Season 16.
A new weapon is also being added to Apex’s loot pool with Season 16. The Nemesis Burst AR is a four-round burst assault rifle that increases its fire rate the longer the trigger is held down. Accurate and versatile, the Nemesis will be an absolute beast, especially at a middle distance.
Lastly, there will be changes made to how new players are onboarded. New players will be put in orientation matches consisting of 16 teams of bots and four teams made up of other newbies. Taking place on the Kings Canyon map, these orientation matches are meant to ease new players into the battle royale experience and not drive them away by getting third-partied immediately. Players will graduate from these matches and be put into the general pool once they win one of these games, place in the top five consistently, or play through a solid number of orientation games.
Having gone hands-on with these new changes, I can confidently say that they are for the better. Team Deathmatch is a very welcome addition that feels like a natural progression from Arenas, and all of the class alterations should hopefully mix things up in a fun and interesting way. The Nemesis is an absolute machine as well.
