February 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Confirmed

A ripper month

So, do we pretend that the recent leak didn’t happen and go about this article like every other month? Nah, we’ve all seen the PlayStation Plus leak by now, so we won’t beat around the bush and get stuck into the meat and potatoes. Last month we got Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76 and Axion Verge 2, which was pretty solid, but the lineup ahead is looking even better.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for February are Evil Dead: The Game, OlliOlli World, Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Mafia: Definitive Edition. These four games will be available to download from February 7.

Horror films and video games have become connected in a very specific way in the last few years, with the asymmetric multiplayer sub-genre becoming the home of 80s horror adaptations. We’ve seen Friday the 13th, Predator, and many others join the party, so standing out is becoming increasingly difficult. Luckily, Evil Dead: The Game manages to do just that by mixing up the formula and having the one in this one versus four format take on the role of an interfering entity rather than a single unstoppable monster. Spawning Deadites, laying traps and causing scares as they demon and collecting pages of the Necronomicon as the survivors is equally as fun, especially if you’re a fan of the source material. We gave Evil Dead: The Game a 7.5.

It’s far from the boom period in the 90s, but skating has re-entered the realms of pop culture again, in large part thanks to the nostalgic ride that was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. Bundling together all of the greatest parts of skating culture in a colourful and whimsical package, OlliOlli World is developer Roll7’s greatest release in the series to date. The flow of the easy-to-learn-hard-to-master platforming is excellent, with the music and visuals rounding out the package perfectly. We gave OlliOlli World a 9.

I won’t lie, I only come back to Destiny 2 in short bursts every few years, so I’m a bit out of the loop. Will the Beyond Light expansion being added to the PS Plus Essentials lineup in February bring me back to the game? Absolutely it will. With the base game being free-to-play, this inclusion simply adds more content to the popular online shooter, which can only be a good thing. The expansion itself wasn’t universally beloved, with die-hard Destiny players lamenting the lack of brand-new strikes and changes to the formula. Still, casuals like myself will likely have a good time. We gave Destiny 2: Beyond Light a 6.5.

Originally released in 2002, Mafia is set in 1930s America, with protagonist Tommy Angelo transitioning from an everyday cab driver to a bonified wise guy. This impressive remake takes the standout gangster game of the early 2000s and gives it an excellent coat of paint, bringing it up to speed with today’s releases. The racecar mission is still a pain in the arse, but the Definitive Edition is a lovingly created remake that should satisfy fans of the original and those playing for the first time. We gave Mafia: Definitive Edition an 8.5.

If you haven’t downloaded Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76 and Axion Verge 2, you’ve got until February 6 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.

Which game will you be downloading first? What games would you like to see in March? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
