Developer Mega Cat Studio and Sony Santa Monica have revealed God of War Sons of Sparta, a 2.5D action platformer that’s available on PS5 right now.
Closing out this morning’s PlayStation State of Play showcase, we got not one but two God of War announcements. The teaser for the God of War Trilogy Remake kicked things off, but the true “one more thing” reveal came in the form of a long-rumoured and anticipated spin-off title. Sons of Sparta is a 2.5D action platformer that sees players take control of a young, pre-ashen-skinned Kratos as he and his brother Deimos endure life-threatening trials at the Agoge.
Gameplay will consist of challenging combat helmed by a spear-and-shield combo, flanked by magical abilities granted to Kratos by the Gifts of Olympus, artifacts that let the young Spartan take the fight to gorgons, cyclops, and all manner of beasties. The game employs a pixel artstyle that I’m not 100% sold on just yet, but I’m hoping it might grow on me over time. Something that I don’t need to warm to is the return of OG Kratos voice actor TC Carson, who narrates the game as the future god killer for the first time since God of War: Ascension.
Thankfully, there’s absolutely no time to wait and see, as the game shadow-dropped during the showcase, and it’s available to play on PS5 right now. It’ll run you $44.95 if this genre is your jam, so get around it.
