July 2023’S PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

Warm yourself by this fire line-up

My fingers are frozen, I’m wearing three beanies, and I can’t feel my toes, but I refuse to focus on Winter for a second one of these articles in as many months. So, let’s just get straight into the warm and comfortable topic of new video games that we can all play. In July, PlayStation Plus Essentials gave us NBA 2K23, Jurassic World Evolution 2 and Trek to Yomi, but that’s yesterday’s news.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for July are Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered and Endling – Extinction is Forever. These three games will be available to download from July 3.

I don’t need to explain to you what a Call of Duty game is, rather I’ll give you some context about this particular iteration in the looooong running first-person shooter franchise: this one is set in the 80s.

Alright alright, as the name suggests, this Black Ops entry takes place at the height of the Cold War, with the bombastic campaign taking you to Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey and Russia, as you uncover plots, foil world-threatening plans and shoot at heaps of shady operators. Of course, the multiplayer component is alive and well and will undoubtedly get a shot in the arm due to its inclusion in this month’s Essentials line-up. We gave Black Ops Cold War a 7.

Alan Wake 2 has been the talk of the town since it was announced back in 2021, with the new trailers and info only heightening the hype. So, what better time to revisit the original or play through it for the first time on a modern console? Playing as the titular writer, you’ll make your way through the spooky town of Bright Falls with your trusty flashlight and pistol. An intriguing plot, eerie shadow monsters, what’s not to like? New to the series or not, this is one that many people will be eager to get around before October 17. We gave Alan Wake Remastered a 9.

This is one that I had no knowledge of whatsoever, and that’s the best thing about these subscription services. In this 3D side-scroller, you embody the last fox on a desolate Earth, trying to defend your furry companions from the dangers of the dying planet. Gorgeous visuals and an environmental message have me beyond curious, and I imagine I won’t be alone.

If you haven’t downloaded NBA 2K23, Jurassic World Evolution 2 and Trek to Yomi, you’ve got until July 3 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.

Which game will you be downloading first? What games would you like to see in June? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
