May 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

Cars and cavalry

Hmm, there’s nothing major dropping in May, is there? Nothing that I can think of. Nothing at all. Anyway, to make up for the lack of big-ticket launches this month, we’re getting a bizarre assortment of titles that will hopefully scratch the gaming itch. April brought us Meet Your MakerSackboy: A Big Adventure and Tails of Iron, which is a bit of a random gathering in its own right, but it’s got nothing on the variety on the way.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for May are GRID Legends, Chivalry II and Desenders. These three games will be available to download from May 2.

There are plenty of racing games out there, but how many of them have a gripping story filled with high stakes and intrigue? Well, GRID Legends doesn’t exactly have that, its Driven to Glory story mode is pretty cringe, but in an endearing way. What Legends does have, is an array of slick vehicles and solid tracks that come together to provide a fun racing experience. We gave GRID Legends an 8.

When they say chivalry’s not dead, I’m not sure they mean obliterating the enemy knights with a catapult. Choosing from four classes, each with its own weaponry and fighting styles, players take part in huge 64-player battles in forts, open fields and medieval city streets. Clashing swords, sieging towers, and pillaging towns is an absolute blast in this brutal multiplayer title, and if all else fails, you can always yell at people as you charge at them, they might just run away.

Outside of gaming and writing, I do a bit of mountain biking in my spare time. Buuuuuuut, I’m far from a professional, but I’d still like to feel the rush of clearing huge tabletops and bombing down insane drops. Luckily, I can do that without the fear of death in Descenders. Featuring procedurally generated downhill tracks and a list of tricks to land (attempt), you race to the bottom with mates. It’s far from a technical masterpiece, but it is a whole lot of fun.

Oh damn, Tears of the Kingdom is launching in May, huh. Well, I’m almost certain that you’re keen to play it, like everyone else, so why not give our hands-on preview a read?

If you haven’t downloaded Meet Your Maker, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Tails of Iron, you’ve got until May 1 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.

Which game will you be downloading first? What games would you like to see in June? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
