October 2022’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

A high-octane month

We’re on the back straight of 2022, so we’ll soon be inundated with new releases and blockbuster games that’ll steal all of our free time. But, even if you’re booking tickets to Gotham or preparing your loadout to aim for a big kill streak, you’ll want to set aside some time for this month’s PlayStation Plus games. September brought us Need for Speed HeatGranblue Fantasy: Versus and Toem, which was solid, but the next bunch are even better.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for October 2022 are Hot Wheels Unleashed, Injustice 2 and Superhot. All three games will be available to download from October 4.

Many of us will remember playing with Hot Wheels cars when we were younger. Whether you had one of the intricate and insane tracks or the backyard was your course, you likely have fond memories of bashing around the toy cars. Well, you best be prepared to be thrown back into your childhood because Hot Wheels Unleashed is one nostalgic ride. This racer is more than just a cash grab, sporting tight gameplay and some impressive audio and visuals (we gave it a 7.5). Grab your diecast dinosaur car and have a grand old time.

Have you ever wondered who would win a fistfight between Doctor Fate and Captain Cold? Probably not, because Doctor Fate would ruin him. Anyway, a sequel to the excellent DC fighting game, Injustice 2 improves upon everything that the original set in place. A brutal narrative that focuses on Superman’s descent into super-villainy sets the heroes and villains of the DC universe against each other in…Mortal Kombat. Yep, Injustice is developed by Netherrealm Studios, the team behind MK. If you haven’t played this cracker of a fighting game (which we gave a 9.6), this should be your priority next month.

Sometimes it takes hours before you click with a game; other times, that spark never eventuates. Then there are those rare titles that hook you in immediately with their style, systems or story. Superhot manages to do just that with all three aspects. A devilishly clever puzzle game, Superhot’s world only moves when you do, forcing you to take note of your surroundings and plan your actions before you take them. Tasked with eliminating all of the angular red threats in a level before moving on, Superhot is one of those games that you just need to play to appreciate fully. Please, play this game as soon as possible.

If you haven’t downloaded Need for Speed Heat, Granblue Fantasy: Versus and Toem, you’ve got until October 3 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.
