Sonic Frontiers Now Has A Trailer With An Itemised List Of What To Expect

Stop trying to make OPEN ZONE a thing

If you are anything like me, and indulging in at least a rudimentary interest in what the heck is going on in Sonic Frontiers – you’ll be pleased to know that the new Overview Trailer gives you a proper breakdown on precisely what’s going on.

Take a squiz:

Right, so:

  • Sonic and Friends were doing a thing, looking for Chaos Emeralds
  • Tails and Amy were at least with him
  • They got sucked into a dimensional portal
  • He ended up in a place called CYBER SPACE (Notice the separate words, it isn’t ‘cyberspace’ like normal everyday IT people deal with, obviously)
  • It’s a DIGITAL world
  • His friends are missing, and now he is on a big weird island filled with ruins, grindrails and springs
  • Big weird robots are also here
  • There is OPEN ZONE gameplay. OPEN ZONE is still an awkward term that I can’t quite get behind
  • You can do puzzles and junk to unlock and complete more traditional sonic-esque levels
  • Some cool giant robot boss fights?
  • Enjoy some HIGH SPEED, OPEN ZONE gameplay. Nope, OPEN ZONE still does nothing for me
  • New combat system, with combos. Oh, but you can turn on AUTO COMBO to…uh, ignore the combo system?
  • Sonic can do neat loopy trail drawing as a mechanic to do puzzles and battle enemies – “CYLOOP”
  • Dodges? Parries? Counters? What is this, Street Fighter Third Strike?
  • OPEN ZONE

So, the scope is blown wide open. There is a ton going on – and after quite a handful of marketing materials I finally have a grasp on what to actually expect.

It has me properly interested now. I may not be positively VIBRATING with anticipation, but it’s a marked improvement on the initial gameplay reveal that had the game looking clunky and soulless.

Are down for some OPEN ZONE gameplay? Nah? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
