Marvel Rivals dropped an official Launch Trailer over the weekend to reveal further additions to the roster – predictable entries such as Wolverine were shown to be hitting the deck, but for true believers there was a welcome surprise with a few nutty layers.
The inimitable and often unbeatable Squirrel Girl was revealed to be joining the roster, the deepest of deep cut heroes from Marvel Comic pages – with chipper attitude and squirrely friends hitting the deck to kick butts and eat nuts.
But the real surprise came from the reveal of the voice actor choice for ol’ Doreen – given that the pipes of Milana Vayntraub will be bringing Squizzy to life.
The reason this is neat is because Milana Vayntraub was actually cast to play a live action Squirrel Girl for a Marvel TV show pilot – a super hero group known as the New Warriors were going to get their own smaller-budget TV show, and Milana was going to suit up and squirrel out. Sadly the pilot didn’t go further and the whole thing was binned – but people who saw set photos and spoke with Ms. Vayntraub could not deny that she was the best Squirrel Girl choice.
And here we are, a few scant years later, and Milana is now voicing perhaps the most involved videogame implementation of Squirrel Girl, adding to her slowly growing list of Squirrel Girl side-credits. Maybe if we continue on this trajectory, we can get an average-to-good Disney+ TV show within the decade.
Onwards and upwards Squirrel Girl – the world deserves more squirrel puns.
