So all those headlines about the live action Tomb Raider series being quite dead seem to be a little inaccurate, given that news today has come out that company Story Kitchen is currently (still) producing the series in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
A piece at Variety detailed that the company has renewed its first-look television deal with Amazon, before detailing what particular projects are underway – with Tomb Raider mentioned alongside writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge as currently being produced.
Here, the details are clearly shown on their website:

From the piece, they also detail additional gaming media projects that are underway in conjunction with many notable platforms, not just Amazon – with some familiar names, although I gotta say I am shocked to see one amazing duo in there:
Along with their work on “Tomb Raider,” Story Kitchen is currently working with Amazon to develop a film adaptation of the “ToeJam and Earl” games with Stephen Curry co-producing, as well as an adaptation of the hit game “It Takes Two” with Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions co-producing. Other projects in the works include: a “Split Fiction” movie starring Sydney Sweeney from director Jon M. Chu and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick; a “Just Cause” movie at Universal Pictures with Ángel Manuel Soto directing and Aaron Rabin adapting; “Ruiner” for Universal Pictures with Wes Ball directing and Michael Arlen Ross adapting; “Sifu” at Netflix with T.S. Nowlin adapting; “Shinobi” for Universal Pictures with Sam Hargrave directing and Ken Kobayashi adapting; and “Streets of Rage” for Lionsgate.
Eesh, that is a LOT of gaming media being produced. I mean, I really read ToeJam and Earl in there, didn’t I? I didn’t imagine that?
It’s pretty clear that Hollywood is tired of living in the shadow of gaming, so why not even the odds like this. And we have had some remarkable success of late with TV and Film adaptations (alongside a couple stinkers).
It’s at least a relief to hear that Tomb Raider is still puttering along, if only for the potential that Lara Croft’s tale might offer. As far as gaming media goes, it’s a pretty solid premise to turn into a show – find a talented lady and let her raid a few tombs, bish bash bosh, you are most of the way there.
At least, that is how I imagine TV production works.
