E3 Has Been Permanently Cancelled

A long time coming

Parent company  Entertainment Software Association has announced that E3 has been permanently cancelled.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time, but it’s finally happened. After 28 years, the Electronic Entertainment Expo has been officially put to rest. The long-running video game expo has been on shaky ground for a long while, with the last event taking place in 2021 as an all-digital affair. The 2022 in-person and digital event was then cancelled, but a triumphant return was announced for 2023, before publishers like Ubisoft and Devolver Digital publically pulled out, leading to the cancellation of this year’s expo as well.

The slow decline has now reached the bottom, with a statement being posted to X, confirming that the event is now dead and buried. “After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye,” the statement reads, ” Thanks for the memories. GGWP.”

With the popularisation of standalone showcases, held by individual publishers, and the growth of events like Summer Games Fest and The Game Awards, it was obvious that the stagnant E3 would need to evolve or dissolve. And, as of today, we know which route was taken.
