Surprises are nothing new to Helldivers 2. Sure, they will drop a comprehensive list of patch notes, detailing all the weird and wonderful things that are being amended or added to the game – but you can guarantee that every Helldivers 2 patch will ship with some kind of surprise that was omitted for the sake of discovery.
Sometimes these are horrific new enemies, fun new animations or in extreme cases – that one time an entirely new faction was stealth added to the game.
Other times, they are a fun new toy.
More specifically, a Latrine Shovel.
This humble digging tool can be found at random points of interest within the game, and will take up your secondary weapon slot – meaning you will absolutely ditch your high powered plasma cannon to heft the mighty hand spade.
Can you SPANG enemies in the face with it? Sure! Left-click to attack.
But the real highlight? Right-clicking to aim allows digging. And yes, that means you can unearth precious samples with it:
Some particularly creative folk even turned to using it for the sake of creating art – such as this magnificently democratic piece pictured below:
As for whether it offers any tactical advantage, you’d need to query how efficient you may be at slamming baddies in the bonce. While it swings like a champ, your results may vary depending on the heft of your target.
But, you can at least hollow out a foxhole for the sake of taking cover:
I claim this hole as my home (super earth approved)

It is additions like these that gets me all riled up with Helldivers 2. In the same update that delivered a portable Hellbomb, the devs also delivered a poop shovel that arguably overshadowed it entirely.
Now if you will excuse me, I am going to do my best Warhammer 40,000 Death Korps of Krieg impression on some poor bug/bot/bastard.
