Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic Will Release Before 2030 According To Game Director Casey Hudson

Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future

Arcanaut Studios CEO and Director Casey Hudson has claimed that the team’s debut title, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, will be released before 2030.

The Game Awards featured a bunch of reveals and announcements this year, in between Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 winning almost every trophy up for grabs. One of the biggest ticket items to come from this year’s Geoff Keighley extravoganza was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a single-player action-adventure game that will act as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic. The freshly revealed game does more than share a naming convention with KotOR to deem it a successor, as Casey Hudson, the director of the original game, is back in the same role, albeit with a new outfit at Arcanaut Studios.

The reveal itself came in the form of a short, one-and-a-half-minute cinematic trailer depicting a Jedi landing on a derelict planet and approaching a shadowy figure aboard a downed starship. The trailer was exciting and cryptic, but it ended with a vague “coming to consoles and PC,” while omitting any release information, not even a projected year. An interview with Casey Hudson appeared on the Star Wars website later that day, stating that FotOR was “still in the early stages of development and creation.”

That interview article confirms that Arcanaut Studios was founded by Hudson just this year. Jumping over to the FotOR website, you can see job listings for a variety of senior positions, such as Senior Concept Artists, Senior Technical Designer, and Senior Level Designer, showing that the studio itself is still being built out. Taking all of this into consideration, Bloomberg writer and prolific video game journalist Jason Schreier took to Bluesky to joke that “Maybe it’ll be a PlayStation 7 game,” while saying that “2030 is an *optimistic* guess.”

Last night's biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed KOTOR (and Anthem). Exciting news for lots of people… but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an *optimistic* guess. Maybe it'll be a PlayStation 7 game

Naturally, the internet took this quite literally, assuming that Schreier had the inside scoop that this was the scheduled release window. Well, in an effort to clear things up and instil some true optimism, Casey Hudson jumped on Twitter to clear the air. In a Tweet responding to the circulating rumour, Hudson stated that the “game will be out before then,” referring to the year 2030, following up with a tongue-in-cheek comment of “I’m not getting any younger.”

While I want to take Casey’s word at face value and let myself get an unhealthy level of excitement for Fate of the Old Republic, Star Wars as a franchise has become synonymous with games that get announced before drifting into obscurity, fading like a Force Ghost, if you will. Quantic Dream’s adventure title, Star Wars Eclipse, was announced back in 2021, before coming down with a bad case of radio silence. A report claimed the team planned to ship the game in 2026, but that report was published back in 2023, and we’re fast approaching that target, having heard nothing more than whispers since.

Similarly, the previously announced Knights of the Old Republic remake, originally developed by Aspyr, was handed over to Sabre Interactive after an indefinite delay. Just like Eclipse, the KotOR remake was announced in 2021, and we’ve only heard about delays, setbacks, and troubling news since. All of the details we’ve heard about Fate of the Old Republic sound incredible, particularly that Casey Hudson is back in the galaxy far, far away, but it’s worth sprinkling some caution in with your optimism, at least for now.
