The Original Dawn Of War Is Getting A Souped-Up Definitive Re-Release

The grim darkness of 2004 is being dragged into the far future of 2025

The iconic and often-imitated-but-never-improved banger of a game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, has today been announced to be receiving a hot new Definitive Edition re-release to rocket it into the modern gaming sphere.

Not quite a remaster, absolutely not a remake, the Definitive Edition seeks to consolidate the games fractured existence into one simple client, with all the lovely modern trimmings one would expect for a game:

The award winning and genre-defining classic RTS game has not ceased to be available on online stores, it’s just become a bit unwieldly with regards to how it runs – the main issue this super edition hopes to solve.

As far as features and improvements go, it is a doozy of a list, so strap in:

  • Four classic Dawn of War Campaigns
  • Nine unique armies
  • Over 200 maps
  • Proper 4k support
  • Upscaled textures
  • Image-based lighting
  • World lighting
  • Unit reflections
  • Improved shadows
  • New unit gloss
  • Emissive lighting
  • Improved gameplay camera
  • Upgraded HUD
  • Optimised screen layout (for widescreen support, baby)
  • Upgraded to a proper 64-bit platform
  • Full compatibility with over 20-years of community mods

That’s a spicy meatball. Usually the word ‘definitive’ can feel a little mis-used – but in this case, it looks bang on.

Dawn of War as a series has had many highs (and lows) but the original has always held a special place in the hearts of many, so it is great to see a title like this act as equal parts celebration, and preservation. While no release date is set at this time, I am positively vibrating at the thought of getting my hands on this beauty.
